About Philipsburg

Montana's first-ever Community of the Year Award was recently presented to Philipsburg. The award is directed at honoring a community that has done exceptional work in promoting, preserving, and improving its image and visitor resources for the benefit of not only its visitors, but its residents and Montana as well.

Here are a few examples of what has been done to deserve such an honor:

Main street has vintage street lights valued at $4,000 each that were paid for and installed by local businesses and 26 community volunteers ... and the U.S. & Montana flags that wave there now were also purchased and placed the same way.

The historic business district fronts are cheerfully painted and earned the title of one of the nation's five "Prettiest Painted Places" by the national Paint Quality Institute.

The historic Opera House was renovated -- by plenty of volunteer work -- to host an annual  Rocky Mountain Accordion Celebration and now is in service to the community and region for years to come.

The Granite County Museum was expanded -- through volunteer efforts -- to include a cultural center for meetings and small plays. The volunteers also created a very realistic underground mining display at the museum and the museum hosts Montana's Ghost Town Hall of fame.

In addition, Philipsburg's 900 or so residents host visitors from all over the region during their Flint Creek Valley Days, and they share their community with the children from Camp Make-A- Dream, a summer camp for children with cancer, on several days in the summer.

For those who prefer outdoor activities, Philipsburg has an endless array of opportunities. Outdoor activities include blue ribbon trout fishing on nearby Rock Creek, camping and water sports on picturesque Georgetown Lake, hiking and mountain lake fishing in the Pintlar Wilderness, and big game hunting opportunities throughout Flint Creek Valley.
